Year 3

WHAT’S IT LIKE IN YEAR THREE?

Year 3 is your child’s first year in Key Stage 2 and this is where children are encouraged to take more ownership of their learning and become increasingly independent. Children will build upon the solid foundations taught in Key Stage 1 and will refine and apply the skills they acquired to become fluent readers, recognise a wide range of sight vocabulary and practise a range of strategies to decode new words. Although the Multiplication Tables Check does not take place until Year 4, we begin to practise times tables frequently so that children have plenty of time to prepare and become fluent. The Year 3 curriculum is packed full of exciting topics ranging from learning all about the Stone Age in History to studying William Morris in Art. Children will also take part in an African drumming workshop with a music specialist where they will learn about the origin of the drums and will learn how to play them.
